Questions to ask before making a move

  • What monthly amount is affordable for the elder’s budget
  • Is the new location convenient for family and friends to visit
  • Is space available now or what is the waiting list process and is the deposit refundable
  • Are familiar services still accessible, eg. doctor, dentist, bank
  • Are walkers and electric wheelchairs acceptable and does the area around the site accommodate them
  • Does it meet the elder’s need for privacy and independence
  • Is a damage deposit required and is the monthly lease or agreement clear
  • Is support with the activities of daily living ( bathing, medications, escorts) available
  • What safeguards are in place if the elder has memory loss that may affect their safety
  • Is there an added charge for a couple
  • Is there parking for a car if applicable or storage for an outdoor scooter
  • Are meals to the suite provided and what is the charge
  • What activities provided are of interest to the elder
  • Does the activity bus deliver the elder to appointments
  • Are pets allowed
